But too often, home owners fail to consider the room layout that defines the space into their home. You should also consider lighting the room when planning the layout of each. In general, the rule is that the less natural light there is, the more open space should be. So if your bedroom has only a small window, keep furniture to a minimum and leave a lot of empty floor space. This makes the room look roomier and keep it from feeling too cramped. Likewise, if a well-lit room, you can balance it by making the furniture more.

Finally, decide where to put the rugs and carpets. Do you need a rug for the door between two rooms, or under your furniture? Furniture carpets are great for defining the areas in large rooms, while more neutral carpet works well as a room divider. Choose one that fits your needs better and your decorating theme, and you've got the perfect accent piece for your layout.
